Career Choice & Chinese American Youth

Factors Influencing Career Decision Status of Chinese American Youth

Due to the process of acculturation and the integration of Western norms, Chinese-American youth often have contradicting views about career in relation to their more traditional parents. The purpose of this study is to heighten the understanding of the relationships between intergenerational family conflict, relational-interdependent self-construal, and career decision status (indecision and certainty) among Chinese-American youth. A total of 130 Chinese American youth participated in this study. The results of the study indicated that as intergenerational family conflict increases, Chinese American youth are more likely to be indecisive about their career choice. Relational-interdependent self-construal was related to career certainty. U.S.-born participants had a higher likelihood of intergenerational family conflict, and that conflict increases with length of stay in the U.S. for overseas-born participants.
