Flip Videos

I plan on including some short Flip video examples, and some longer instructional video examples. In general I plan on offering two versions with each product: pop-up movie in web browser and downloadable iPhone versions of the video. Coming later in October 2009.

Ratio Trianges

In this 4.5 minute Flip video Shannon Halkyard explains the use of ratio triangles as an instructional aid in remembering and calculating key proportions in chemistry. Even if you're not a high school chemistry teacher, this video is useful as a very creative and simple technique—you may find ways to expand the basic idea to your own area of teaching.

Give the pop-up video a minute or two to load before actually playing it. It's 50 Mb in size. The iPhone version is about 28 Mb.

Getting to My Office

This is a flip video showing how to get to my office—not a minor issue for people who've never been there before! I shot this video with a Flip Ultra HD, later ditched the audio, and added an audio narration done in my office over the video. In this way I was able to get cleaner and better audio.

The video comes in two flavors: a pop-up video and an iPhone version. The pop-up video is 100 Mb so wait a couple of minutes before playing so it can load. The iPhone version is only 27 Mb but looks great on a mobile device.

QuickTime Movies
This includes any file that has an MOV extension. Mac-users double-click the file to open.

Windows-users: open by right-clicking and choose QuickTime from the open with options. The movie will not play correctly if you double-click and open in Windows Media Player or RealPlayer.

Guidelines: Typically the QuickTime movies play best if you use headphones instead of relying on a computer's speakers. Use up/down arrow keys to increase/decrease volume. Use the spacebar to pause/play.

Cooliris Photo Walls
This is a special kind of photography wall that shows 12 images at a time. I mainly use this in the Photos section. Photo walls are especially useful when sharing lots of photos. You can scroll through the images by swooshing to the left or right with your mouse.

If you click on one image then it will enlarge to fill most of the wall's frame. On the top right of the enlarged photo you'll see a little box icon with an arrow coming out of it. Click on that and you'll be taken to the image at my Flickr account—and there you'll be able to see it at various sizes including 1280x720. When a photo is selected, at the center bottom portion of the screen you'll see a little monitor icon. Click that and a nice slideshow of the images will begin starting with the image you've selected.

Flickr Pro
You can see photos in my Flickr Pro account two ways: clicking on an image on the blog page or clicking on the right icon in a Cooliris photo wall. Once at Flickr then you can choose to do several things. Most of these options are in the form of little icons displayed above the photo. The most useful is like the icon with text that says, "All Sizes." This will allow you to see the image in a larger sized format and also allow you to download the image to your hard drive in a variety of sizes.

Audiobooks
Audiobooks are similar to MP3 files, but they have some key extra features. Technically these files have an M4B extension. These audio files contain chapters for easy navigation, may have embedded images, and are placed in a special audiobooks folder within iTunes.

iPhone Synchronization
Some versions of movies posted to this website will be clearly labelled as being in an iPhone format. This means you can play the movie on an iPhone, iPod Touch, or any other mobile device that handles this kind of media. In addition you'll want to add audiobooks to your iTunes library.

Instructions: Download the iPhone movie, unzip the downloaded file (some computer setups will do this automatically), add the relevant files to your iTunes library, then sync with your iPhone or iPod Touch.
