usf almost smoke-free
Oh happy day!!! Stephen Privett S.J., USF President, just sent out this email to faculty and staff at USF (see below). Starting August 23rd we become almost smoke-free: there are two very remote spots where you can smoke, neither one anywhere near the School of Education.
President's Email
This fall the University is taking a further step towards becoming a smoke-free campus. Effective fall 2008, there will be two -- and only two -- designated smoking areas, one on the lower campus and one on Lone Mountain. After two years, these two designated areas will most likely be eliminated, and the campus will complete its transition to an entirely smoke-free environment. The University's campus smoking policy is available at the usf smoking policies webpage.
Restricting smoking on the Hilltop protects the health and well-being of all who live, work, study or visit the campus. Keeping our air smoke-free will require some individuals to sacrifice for the good of us all. There is no doubt of the inconvenience this will cause smokers, nor of how it will benefit the campus-at-large. USF's successful transition to a non-smoking environment will require understanding, cooperation and support from non-smokers and smokers alike. The University, through its Health Promotion Services and Well Life program will work to educate the entire university community to the serious health risks posed by smoking, and also to assist those who would like to quit smoking.
USF aims to distinguish itself as a diverse, socially responsible learning community of high quality scholarship and academic rigor. The creation of a smoke-free environment at this point is the socially responsible course of action based on extensive and rigorous research findings. In this instance, head and heart require us to change in the small world of USF. I ask your cooperation and support in effecting this change.

motivation website coming soon

I haven't been posting anything of late because I've been busily working on the upcoming Motivation course website and syllabus. I plan on launching this course website on August 1st. Okay, that's way way before the start of classes on August 23rd. But I thought some people would appreciate having some extra time to become familiar with the website and download some things like the syllabus.
If you are registered for the Motivation course then you'll automatically receive an email from me when the website opens. If you plan on taking the course, but are not currently registered, please contact me via email and I'll make sure to add you to the course mailing list.
I'm quite excited about the course for several reasons. However, one of those reasons is that I'll be experimenting with a new kind of student product this semester: one that seems to hold a lot of potential and should be an exciting opportunity for students.

paris mélange

I've just completed a multimedia slideshow composed of photos I recently took in Paris. The movie is just under 14 minutes in length. No "monuments" or "sites." Instead the attempt was to catch people in fleeting, naturalistic moments. It's accompanied by some of the music that was present in the air while visiting Paris.
Head on over to the Paris section to read more details and download the movie.
The Paris Summer blog has had a couple recent entries, including one today. It's all finished now, however.

ollie is vet-approved

Susan took Ollie to the vet today. He happily jumped into the carrying case. (Question: When has that happened before? Answer: Never.) Lee, our vet, said Ollie was between 5.5 and 6 months old (he can tell from how the teeth have grown out). He also said that Ollie, based on leg size and other characteristics, should be about 6 pounds now. In actuality he's barely 4 pounds. And he's flea ridden. But no baddies (FIV, leukemia, etc.). So, as an abadoned cat Ollie is malnourished, a haven for fleas, and very very grateful to have found a home. We've taken care of the fleas, now we're working on beefing him up!
Ollie has found and adopted Boo's dog bed. (Boo is 22 lbs vs. Ollie's 4.) You can't tell from the photo but the full dog bed absolutely dwarfs Ollie. He loves it. Thanks Preston for bringing the goodness of Costco animal barco-loungers to our home.
